Driving Route: Amman to the Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is the ultimate Amman day trip. But there's more than one way to get there, and the drive itself is part of the adventure. Here's how to navigate the descent to the lowest point on Earth.

The Main Route (Dead Sea Road)

The most direct route is via the Dead Sea Road (Route 40). It's a 60km journey that takes about an hour. The road is a wide, dual-carriageway that descends nearly 1,200 meters from Amman's heights. Ensure your brakes are in good condition, as the descent is long and continuous.

The Scenic Alternative (Via Mount Nebo)

If you have more time, drive to Madaba and Mount Nebo first, then take the winding mountain road down to the sea. It's slower but offers incredible panoramic views of the entire Jordan Valley and the West Bank in the distance.

FAQs

Are there fuel stations on the way?

There are several large stations on the way out of Amman and a few near the hotel zone at the Dead Sea. We recommend fueling up before you leave the city.

Is the road safe in winter?

Generally yes, but fog can be an issue in the mountains, and heavy rain can occasionally cause rockfalls on the steep sections. Always check the weather forecast.
