Is Driving in Amman Difficult for Tourists?

This is the most common question we hear. The honest answer? It's more challenging than driving in a quiet suburb in Europe or the US, but it's much easier than driving in Cairo or Mumbai. It's all about managing expectations.

What Makes it Challenging?

The main challenges are the aggressive (but generally skillful) driving style of locals, the steep hills, and the sheer volume of traffic in the city center. However, the roads themselves are in good condition, and the signage is excellent.

What Makes it Easy?

Outside of the city center, driving in Jordan is a breeze. The highways are wide and straight, and there is very little traffic on the desert roads. Once you get through the first 30 minutes of Amman traffic, you'll likely feel much more confident.

FAQs

Should I avoid driving in the city center?

If it's your first time, yes. Park your car in a newer area like Abdali and take a short taxi ride into the historic Balad (downtown).

Are the drivers aggressive?

They are assertive but usually predictable. They will often nose their way into traffic; just be prepared to give a little space.
